Parkinson's 'MOT' and Well-Being Service

Whether you are newly diagnosed or experiencing complex symptoms, navigating Parkinson's can be a daunting and confusing process if you do not have access to the right support and advice when you need it. We offer tailored well-being advice and therapy input to help you maximise your wellbeing, independence and quality of life, and support you on your Parkinson's journey.

You will undergo an initial assessment (or 'Parkinson's MOT') with our occupational therapist (OT) and receive a personalised 'action plan'.

Topics for discussion may include:

  • performance of daily activities

  • mobility difficulties

  • potential aids, equipment and adaptations to your home

  • management of fatigue, pain, low mood, anxiety and / or cognitive changes

  • exercise, diet and lifestyle

If appropriate, we can make onward referrals to physiotherapists, psychologists, speech and language therapists and dieticians, from our directory of trusted professionals. Referrals into NHS services will be made where possible.

What is Occupational Therapy (OT)?

'An occupation is any activity that we need, want or like to do to live and to look after our physical and mental health, and our emotional and spiritual wellbeing. An occupation can be self-care, such as washing, eating or sleeping; productive, such as work, study, caring or domestic activities; and leisure, such as playing sports, hobbies or socialising.

Occupational therapists see beyond diagnoses and limitations to hopes and aspirations. They look at relationships between the activities you do every day – your occupations – alongside the challenges you face and your environment.

Then, they create a plan of goals and adjustments targeted at achieving a specific set of activities. The plan is practical, realistic and personal to you as an individual, to help you achieve the breakthroughs you need to elevate your everyday life'

I have over 20 years experience as an Occupational Therapist.  After training in York, I worked both in the NHS and social services before heading to Brisbane, Australia. There I worked in a large private hospital that is recognised as an international centre of excellence for movement disorders and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).  I was involved in the development and implementation of the hospital's Parkinson's therapy programme, and worked closely with patients pre and post DBS surgery.

Since returning to the UK,  I have continued to develop on my professional interest in working with people with Parkinson's , and in 2016 also gained more of a personal perspective when my own father was diagnosed with the condition.

I am an active member of the Parkinson’s Excellence Network, and a core member of their Exercise Hub. I work closely with Parkinson's UK at a national and regional level, and regularly provide input to Parkinson’s UK’s programmes, policies and publications from an occupational therapy prospective.

The ethos of my practice is to always provide a high quality occupational therapy service, to enable clients to optimise their function and improve their quality of life, whatever their condition or circumstance.  I am passionate about working closely with families and carers, and recognise the importance of maintaining their health and well-being as well as the client’s.
